Polyacetal Gear

Polyformaldehyde (POM), known as acetal, polyacetal, and polyformaldehyde, is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic used in the production of precision parts requiring stiffness, low friction, and dimensional stability. It is produced by the polymerization of formaldehyde, and there are two variations, homopolymer, and copolymer, with different properties. There are six different grades of polyacetals, each with different properties, the basic characteristics being the strength and dimensional stability.

Polyphenylene Sulfide Gear

PPS is a high-performance thermoplastic due to its ability to tolerate high temperatures and dimensional stability. Like polyacetals, PPS is a rigid, opaque semi-crystalline thermoplastic with a melting point of 536°F(280°C). It is produced by the reaction of sodium sulfide and dichlorobenzene in a solvent. The key factors in deciding to use PPS for gear production were its strength, rigidity, and low degradation at high temperatures.

Polycarbonate is a transparent thermoplastic that has high strength, making it resistant to impact and fracture. It is an environmentally friendly polymer that uses a pressure molding process to make gears. Like other polymers, PC has outstanding strength, with a melting point of 311°F(155°C). One of the disadvantages of polycarbonate is that it costs more than other geared polymers. Manufacturing processes used to produce PC gears include extrusion and injection molding.
